Karate Gi Size Guide

Finding the right karate gi size is more important than most beginners realise. A gi that is too large restricts movement and looks untidy. A gi that is too small rides up during training and can be uncomfortable. Getting the right fit improves both comfort and performance.

How Karate Gi Sizing Works

Most karate gi manufacturers size their products based on height in centimetres. A size 170, for example, is designed for someone approximately 170cm tall. However, sizing varies between brands and between lightweight and heavyweight gi.

Key Measurements

  • Height - The primary sizing factor
  • Chest - Important for jacket fit
  • Waist - Determines trouser comfort
  • Arm length - Sleeves should reach the wrist bone
  • Leg length - Trousers should reach the ankle bone

Lightweight vs Heavyweight Fit

Lightweight gi (8oz-10oz) tend to fit more loosely and are designed for ease of movement. Heavyweight gi (12oz-14oz) are stiffer and may feel tighter initially but soften with washing and training.

Shrinkage Considerations

Cotton karate gi will shrink after washing, typically 2-5cm in length. Many practitioners buy slightly longer than their measured size to account for this. Always check the manufacturer’s shrinkage guidance.

Key Takeaways

  • Size your gi primarily by height in centimetres
  • Check chest and waist measurements for a comfortable fit
  • Account for 2-5cm shrinkage in cotton gi
  • Sleeves should reach your wrist bone, trousers your ankle bone
  • Different brands and weights fit differently - check each manufacturer’s size chart
